Imagine whacking a biodegradable golf ball from a waterside dock towards a floating target, all in the name of charity.
It’s a “par tee” on the water aimed at helping kids. Last year, the event raised $70,000 for charity, said Gina Boilini, who manages the family-owned business Doc’s Diner in Key Largo and helps organize the event.
“It is definitely unique to our wonderful community. It puts a little spin on golf. It incorporates all of our favorites – water, boats and golf,” Boilini said.
Boats Direct USA owners Mark and Eileen Fischer, who regularly donate to charity events, will be participating with their signature orange-and-white Deep Impact 399 Poker Run Edition.
“We love working with local charities in the Keys. This one especially touched Eileen and my hearts as the money raised gets donated to help children,” said Mark Fischer. “It’s all about giving back and I encourage other successful business owners to do the same. At the end of the day it feels wonderful to be in a position where we can help make others’ lives a little bit brighter.”
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Upper Keys Foundation and the Plantation Key School PTA.
The Upper Keys Foundation’s mission is to secure a solution to prevent the Monroe County School Board from eliminating all athletic appropriations. The organization’s goal is to create a service program in which student athletes use their time and energy to serve the community to give back to other causes. The Plantation Key School PTA promotes the welfare and education of students at the school.
The Fischers’ Lamborghini orange-and-white Deep Impact 399 Poker Run Edition will be front and center at the event, as radio personalities Hoebee, host of Afternoon Drive on Sun Classic Rock, and Ricky Lopez, King of Florida Keys radio, broadcast live from the deck of this stunning boat.
“Boats Direct USA has a very close relationship with the Florida Keys Media Group. They have been amazing partners over the years with our Key Largo Fun Run events that benefitted the Coral Restoration Foundationand the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center,” Fischer said. “The Conch Scramble will definitely appreciate the exposure to listeners from Key Largo down to Key West being able to tune into the fun that Hoebee and Rick will be having on my Deep Impact Boat. It will be a play-by-play live show throughout the day of fun and excitement with two of Florida Keys’ favorite radio personalities.”
Hoebee and Ricky Lopez said they are honored to be participating.
“Radio is all about tuning in to our local communities and making sure we give coverage to events like this that truly raise awareness for a great cause,” Lopez said. “ Hoebee and I care more about keeping our kids busy with good activities than words can describe, and we are ready to hit some balls off the back of Mark’s gorgeous 399 Deep Impact!”
The event has already stirred interest, with 45 teams composed of four players and a designated driver expected to participate, Boilini said. Each team will display a flag on the boat identifying them as a player.
The floating golf game is composed of nine floating targets positioned at varying distances from the tee. Target placement will range from 30 to 120 yards from each dock. It doesn’t matter whether you are a golf pro or a duffer. Some players play to win. Some players play for fun. In the end, it’s all for a good cause.
